Should universities be more like corporations? A conversation with UVA President James Ryan

February 20, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Thursday, February 20th
4:00pm – 5:00pm
AEI Auditorium
(1789 Massachusetts Avenue NW )

Universities have traditionally defined their missions somewhat narrowly: discover and disseminate knowledge and prepare students for a successful life once they leave. Today, as universities face criticism from an increasingly skeptical public and the challenges of the world grow more numerous and complex, universities are being asked to address a wide array of societal issues beyond this traditional scope. For instance, they are being asked to develop engaged citizens, promote pathways to upward mobility, and foster explorations of truth and civic debate within their communities.

At a time when other large institutions, such as corporations, are taking a broader view of their responsibilities, should universities be thinking differently about their role? What should higher education institutions focus on, and how should they be judged? Join AEI as University of Virginia President James E. Ryan addresses these questions.

Join the conversation on social media with #CorporationU.
