COMMITTEES

The Book Club meets once a month, generally on Mondays. On a typical day, the Book Club usually consists of a group of about ten to fifteen people, and the group meets for about two hours and chooses books based on a group vote, and the focus is on contemporary fiction. Occasionally, the club hosts events where a group goes to see popular authors when they come to town. Service projects are also organized by the club, along with events connected to literacy and writing. New members are always welcome to apply!

The Executive Board consists of the President, President Emeritus, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

The Marketing & Communications Committee is responsible for our monthly newsletters, social media accounts, and web‐based technology tools that help promote Club activities and collaborates on design and production of University communications. Marketing & Communications aims to employ cutting-edge and efficient marketing and promotional strategies. The goal is to facilitate the expansion of the Club and its events while ensuring that the Club’s resources are valuable to alumni, their families, and friends.

The Networking Committee plays a pivotal role in facilitating professional growth by organizing a diverse range of professional development and networking events. These events include informative sessions, dynamic panel discussions, alumni career fairs, and hands-on resume workshops. Recognizing the importance of targeted networking, the committee has established various focus groups tailored to individuals interested in specific sectors, such as health care and information technology. Through these initiatives, the committee strives to foster meaningful connections, enhance career development opportunities, and create a supportive community for individuals seeking to excel in their respective fields.

The UVA Club of Washington, DC’s Scholarship Fund endeavors to ensure accepted undergraduate applicants with demonstrated financial needs from the greater DC metropolitan area have the best financial offering to attend the University of Virginia compared to offerings of similar or better institutions. The Scholarship committee will sustainably deploy both financial and non-financial resources to this end of making the University the best value for all prospective students.

The Schools Committee reaches out to high school students and guidance counselors through college fairs and information sessions to provide prospective Hoos with information about the University of Virginia. The Schools Committee also coordinates congratulatory phone calls to welcome newly accepted DC-area Hoos and organizes a send‐off party for newly admitted DC Hoos. Lastly, Schools oversees The Jefferson Book Award Program in the area, aiming to acknowledge outstanding local high school students in their junior year and to prompt interest in applying to the University. The awards are presented by the Schools Committee to juniors who the local high schools consider to best represent the Jeffersonian ideals of scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.

The Service Committee orchestrates frequent service projects to involve alumni, family, and friends. The committee collaborates with local nonprofit organizations, effectively showcasing their efforts and addressing the needs of the DC-area community. Frequently, the committee volunteers at children’s organizations, public schools, food kitchens, and community‐organized events. In addition, the Service Committee coordinates Cavaliers Care month in April for the DC area.

The Social Committee plans a variety of social events such as outdoor activities, happy hours, mixers, and more! We plan all kinds of diverse events, from supper clubs, to craft nights, wine tastings, and various get togethers. If you’re a Wahoo or affiliated with an alum who owns or operate restaurants, bars, or services in the DC/VA area, we want to work with you on future events and spotlight your business!

The Sports Committee plans UVA football and basketball game‐watch parties and trips to local professional sports games. Each year, we cheer on the Nationals, Wizards, Capitals, and DC United, as well as UVA sports games played in the greater Washington, DC, metro area.
