Wed, April 21st @ 7:00pm

All alumni, parents, and friends are invited to join us as we host an online event to discuss

“Swoope Almanac: Stories of Love, Land, and Water, in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley”, written by Robert Whitescarver, who will be joining us for this lively discussion. You can purchase the book here.

We are thrilled that our discussion will be enhanced by the participation of Nancy Stoner (CLAS’ 82), President of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN). Participants are also encouraged to join us at PRKN’s river clean-up scheduled for Saturday, April 24th.

Registration table will be set up right at the foot of Madison Street.

The Potomac Riverkeeper Network’s <https://www.potomacriverkeepernetwork.org> mission is to protect the public’s right to clean water in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and their tributaries. They stop pollution to enhance the safety of our drinking water, protect healthy river habitats, and enhance public use and enjoyment.

Volunteers of all ages are needed to help remove single-use plastics and trash washed along the bank of the river. Please be prepared and dress accordingly. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet and muddy. Please bring water (in your reusable water bottle, of course) and snacks. PRKN will provide gloves, bags, and trash pickers.

At registration, they will ask you to complete a safety waiver to participate in the event (children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who must complete and sign their waiver).

Please join PRKN staff for a fun and productive morning on the beautiful Potomac near Old Town Alexandria.

***Update regarding Covid-19 and social distancing***

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we will be following safe social distancing practices at this event. PRKN is extending the registration time for their cleanups to be one hour long, starting 30 minutes before the scheduled event start time to prevent overcrowding at the registration table. Masks must be worn at the registration table. We will be taking steps to minimize contact throughout the event.

Street parking is available at the end of Madison Street, and additional parking is available around the park and garages nearby.

Capital Area Food Bank
Thursday, April 29 @5:30-8pm

Help us sort and pack donations to be distributed to local families in need by volunteering with fellow Hoos at the Capital Area Food Bank, whose mission is to feed those who suffer from hunger in the Washington metro area by acquiring food and distributing it through its network of partner agencies; and educating, empowering and enlightening the community about the issues of hunger and nutrition. Cap of 10 volunteers.
In accordance with the DC Government and CDC recommendations, all volunteers are required to wear a mask or face covering at all times in our facility over their mouth and nose. Due to our limited supply of masks, we are asking volunteers to bring their own if possible. All volunteers, guests, and staff are required to have their temperature taken by a touchless scanner when entering the food back facilities.

AHC Inc, an affordable housing developer, believes Housing + Education = Success. AHC runs tutoring programs at their community centers in Arlington. With education programs operating virtually this year, students drop by the community centers once a week to pick up supplies, including a bag of healthy snacks to keep them energized while they do their homework.
Volunteers can help by purchasing and assembling snack bags at home.
Supplies needed – paper lunch bags, 3-4 types of non-perishable snack foods such as pretzels, no-nut granola bars, mandarin orange or other fruit cups, crackers and juice boxes. For dietary restrictions, we prefer no nuts and no gelatin fruit snacks.
Assemble bags at home. Decorating the bags is fun but optional.
AHC staff are not working in the office full time so delivery options are limited to what is listed -Mondays, 10am, 2230 N Fairfax Dr, Arlington VA 22201 or Tuesdays, 10am-noon or 2-4:30pm, 5539 Columbia Pike, Arlington VA 22204.
