Book Club

Chair: Cedric Chang

The Book Club meets once a month, usually on the second Monday of the month. Typically, there are five to ten people at a meeting and the book discussion lasts for an hour to an hour-and-a-half. Books are voted on by participants. No need to be an English Literature major to participate. Anyone who enjoys reading is welcome.

Marketing & Technology

Co-Chairs: Rose Walsh, Tiffany Turner

The Marketing & Technology Committee is responsible for our monthly newsletters, collateral design and production, social media accounts and web-based technology tools that help promote Club activities and membership. Marketing & Technology strives to utilize the most innovative and effective methods of marketing and promotion to foster the growth of the Club and Club events and to make the Club’s resources useful to alumni and their family and friends.

Networking

Chair: Krish Mayatt

The Networking Committee hosts professional development and networking events including information sessions, panel discussions, alumni career fairs, and resume workshops.  Networking has created various focus groups for alumni who are interested in networking within a specific sector, such as Healthcare and Information Technology.

Schools

Chair: Carrie Brown

The Schools Committee reaches out to high school students and guidance counselors through college fairs and information sessions to provide prospective Hoos with information about the University.  The Schools Committee also conducts a phone-a-thon to welcome newly accepted Hoos and organizes a send-off party for newly accepted DC Hoos. Lastly, Schools coordinates The Jefferson Book Award Program in the area to recognize outstanding local high school students during their junior year and to prompt these students’ interest in applying to the University.  The award is presented by the Schools Committee to a junior who the local high school considers to best represent the Jeffersonian ideals of scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

Service

Co-Chairs: Grace Im, Jen Schonberger

The Service Committee organizes regular service projects for engagement by alumni, family and friends, often by partnering with local nonprofit organizations and thus, highlighting their work as well as some of the needs of the DC area community.  We frequently volunteer at children’s organizations, public schools, food kitchens and community-organized events. In addition, the Service Committee coordinates Cavaliers Care week for the DC area. Cavaliers Care is a Young Alumni Council initiative to have all UVA alumni around the globe participate in service projects to commemorate Thomas Jefferson’s birthday and his spirit of public service.

Social

Co-Chairs: Kristina Lawrence, Holly Turner

The Social Committee plans a variety of interactive events, such as outdoor activities, cultural dinner series, happy hours, mixers, theater events, speaker events, and galas, including Founder’s Day and the Virginia Gold Cup races.  Founder’s Day is an annual event held each April that brings together local alumni to commemorate Thomas Jefferson’s Birthday.  Virginia Gold Cup is a traditional steeplechase race that takes place annually in May.

Sports

Co-Chairs: Bryce Coffee, Brent Murray

The Sports Committee plans game watchings during UVA’s football season and outings to professional DC teams’ games including Washington Capitols and Nationals games.  Sports also coordinates an annual DC United tailgate and game during DC United’s Alumni Night.  In addition, Sports maintains a link to local intramural leagues and thus helps to connect prospective alumni players with local coaches.

Young Alumni

Co-Chairs: Ryan Bugas, Emily Draper

The Young Alumni Committee assists recent graduates within 2 years of graduation transition to both the social and professional network in DC. The Young Alumni Committee coordinates a myriad of events which include ACC happy hours, brunches in Eastern Market, Lighting of the Mall, and DC-specific tours, such as tours of the Capitol and DC museums.
