books based on a group vote and we tend to focus on contemporary fiction. The Book Club also
has events where we go see popular authors when they come to town and we organize service

Schools

The Schools Committee reaches out to high school students and guidance counselors through
college fairs and information sessions to provide prospective Hoos with information about the
University of Virginia. The Schools Committee also coordinates congratulatory phone calls to
welcome newly accepted Hoos and organizes a send‐off party for newly admitted DC Hoos.
Lastly, Schools coordinates The Jefferson Book Award Program in the area to recognize
outstanding local high school students during their junior year and to prompt these students’
interest in applying to the University. The awards are presented by the Schools Committee to
juniors who the local high schools consider to best represent the Jeffersonian ideals of

as well as some of the needs of the DC area community. We frequently volunteer at children’s
organizations, public schools, food kitchens and community‐organized events. In addition, the
Service Committee coordinates Cavaliers Care month in April for the DC area. Cavaliers Care

HOOS 2.0 – looking for committee members!

The HOOS 2.0 Committee will plan activities that will attract and encourage older graduates to become active in the UVa Club of Washington. This is a new committee, thus the 2019-2020 co-chairs will play an integral role in defining the role of this committee within the alumni community. Possible activities/offerings/services include planning play groups for new parents/stay at home parents, hosting Dinner Club/Wine dinners at up and coming DC restaurants, offering events in the DC/NOVA suburbs, and promoting daytime activities such as art classes, cooking classes, lunches, as well as weekday trips to nearby points of interests. Board positions for this committee are currently filled – we are looking primarily for members to help plan, create, and execute events for fellow alum!
